UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre has been involved in several hotly-contested feuds. From Matt Hughes to BJ Penn to Josh Koscheck, GSP has been able to withstand the trash-talk and focus on his opponent for the most part.
During a recent interview with SportsNet.ca, St-Pierre was asked about the outburst from UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva against Chael Sonnen during a recent conference call. “The Spider” was out of character from what everyone has seen before, saying he would do things to Sonnen that have never been done before inside the Octagon.
“He wants to get into Anderson Silva’s head and he did it. That’s what he wants, because when you fight with emotion, you don’t fight smart,” St-Pierre said. “The crowd, they love it. (Silva) he’s going to go crazy but he can make a mistake if you do that. It’s a big mistake. You have to go back to the reason he’s a champion; he fights smart, he’s skilled.”
Silva and Sonnen meet at UFC 148 on July 7, while St-Pierre is expected to return from a knee injury against Carlos Condit later this year.
St-Pierre added that Silva, “doesn’t go crazy (when he competes). That’s what Chael Sonnen wants from him.”
