Carlos Condit Planning On Fighting GSP Later This Year

As far as Carlos Condit is concerned, his next fight inside the Octagon will be against Georges St-Pierre for the unified UFC welterweight championship.

GSP is currently rehabbing from a torn ACL, but has targeted a return date of November for the match with Condit. “The Natural Born Killer” informed Bleacher Reporta during a recent interview that he hasn’t heard anything different from the UFC.

The bottom line is that the UFC has not offered me another fight. I haven’t been contacted, not has my management been contacted about fighting anybody else other than Georges St-Pierre. So, Georges is the guy I want. And if the UFC wants that fight, I’m content to wait for him to be ready.

The planned meeting is UFC 154 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The idea is to have Martin Kampmann and Johny Hendricks in the co-main event for the No. 1 contender spot, which would also provide an opponent if Condit or GSP were to be forced out before the date arrives.

I’m sure he could have asked for a fight. What’s the point of having an interim title if he didn’t defend it?

Couldn’t agree more. No better way to make an Interm belt seem pointless than to never defend it. But then again, Carwin never defended his Interm Belt and I don’t believe Mir did either. It seems like Interm belts are just a way for the UFC to still have a title fight so the division doesn’t go with out one for a long time.

What makes more sense is to have a 4 fighter tournament with 2 fighters in reserve when you know the champion will be out for an extended period of time.

In the case of GSP, we could have had Condit vs. Diaz and Kampmann vs. Ellenberg be the 4 in a tournament set and Hendricks and Kos be on reserve. Would have played out nicely.
