Daniel Cormier Will Welcome Frank Mir To Strikeforce For Heavyweight Tilt

It appears that Frank Mir will be the one to help Daniel Cormier close out the Strikeforce heavyweight division, as a report by USA Today confirmed that Mir and Cormier will collide later this year.

Cormier was originally set to fight on the same September card as Gilbert Melendez-Pat Healy for the Strikeforce lightweight title, but now it appears that Cormier-Mir will go down in either October or November as the main event for another Showtime card.

“There has been a lot of speculation as to who Cormier would fight next, and this is the fight that makes the most sense,” UFC president Dana White said. “Cormier is one of the best heavyweights in the world. He needs to fight opponents of that caliber, and Frank Mir is that guy.”

Mir’s agent, Malki Kawa, posted on Twitter for his fighter, saying, “that he’s very excited about this opportunity and is very grateful to the UFC for making this fight happen.”

Mir lost to UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos earlier this year in his quest to wear the belt for a third time. Cormier is undefeated, including a victory in the finals of the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix.

I’m not gonna lie I had thought about this matchup happening after frank lost to jds bit never thought it would happen in strikeforce, that being said I’m pretty excited about this matchup,it makes sense for cormier to fight the last challenger to the ufc belt if he is expected to make the jump and go straight into contention or being a figgting or two away, definitely glad it wasnt tim Silvia

No,cormier was never the stikeforce hw champ, he is the grand prix champ, when Scott coker announced the grand prix he said that they would remain two sepperate belts,so technically overeem was the last strikeforce champ

Unless coker changed his mind later on and I never heard about it

I think I had posted that this would be the most likely fight for Cormier. Mir is a long was out from another title shot (if he ever gets one again) and he now needs big money fights or big challenging fights. Cormier can offer both in this last SF fight.

I was truly surprised when they said Tim Silvia was gonna fight him. I think they should have Tim fight Barnett with the winner getting a shot in the UFC and the loser doesn’t.
