Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez will seek his fifth consecutive title defense when he takes on Pat Healy in the main event of Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Healy.
The card, which takes place September 29 from Sacramento, California, will be shown live on Showtime. Strikeforce officials and Melendez each confirmed the bout via Twitter.
Melendez (21-2) downed Josh Thomson earlier this year for his seventh straight win. He is 11-1 in a dozen fights under the Strikeforce banner.
Healy, a veteran of the sport, carries a record of 28-16 into the fight. Healy defeated Mizuto Hirota for his fifth consecutive victory recently, improving to 8-1 in his last nine fights and 6-1 with Strikeforce.
The card will also feature Daniel Cormier, though no opponent has been signed to face “DC” yet.
