Mike Swick has battled illness and injury to return to the Octagon for the first time since 2010.
This Saturday night, Swick will face DaMarques Johnson at UFC on Fox: Shogun vs. Vera. The bout was added to the main card after Ben Rothwell-Travis Browne was pulled.
For Swick (14-4), getting another chance to do what he loves most is the best thing. After overcoming an esophageal condition, “Quick” suffered a torn ACL just as he was ready to compete again. Now, he’s back and ready for war.
“The one thing that stayed true was I was excited it was a knee injury,” said Swick, in an interview with ESPN. “At least I overcame the big hurdle (the esophageal condition), which was my health.”
Having his health in order, Swick knew rehab would fix the knee. Now, he’s thinking only about achieving that one goal left out there: becoming a UFC champion.
“That’s the one goal I’ve had that I’ve never achieved, so it’s always going to be there,” Swick said. “That’s the ultimate goal.”
Swick has lost two straight, falling to Paulo Thiago and Dan Hardy. Prior to that, he had won four in a row inside the Octagon.
