Brandon Vera has placed himself in a position many other MMA fighters might only dream about.
Despite just recently being re-hired by the UFC, Vera is one victory away from a shot at the UFC light heavyweight title.
If Vera can defeat former UFC champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua in convincing fashion Saturday night at UFC on FOX: Shogun vs. Vera, he might land himself an opportunity to fight for the gold belt.
“I feel like I have won the lottery twice, not just fighting a legend like ‘Shogun’ on FOX, but having the chance to get a title shot,” Vera said. “‘The Truth’ is going to shine though. I’m taking his name, his title runs, everything he is, and I’m taking it all for myself.”
Vera accepted the Rua match after being originally set to face James Te Huna. He was actually cut by the UFC after a loss to Thiago Silva in 2011, but was brought back after the fight was changed to a no-contest due to a failed drug test by Silva. He has since defeated Eliot Marshall.
