Brandon Vera put himself in a position to hear plenty of criticism when he proclaimed himself as the future UFC heavyweight and light heavyweight champion.
Since doing so, Vera has struggled inside the Octagon.
However, on Saturday night, “The Truth” will have the opportunity of a lifetime when he takes on Mauricio “Shogun” Rua in the main event of UFC on FOX 4.
Vera was asked during the pre-fight press conference earlier this week if he would be experiencing a “Rocky” moment with a win over Rua. The question was asked in reference to Vera being able to shock the world much like Rocky Balboa did against Apollo Creed on the big screen.
“Yes. The UFC gave me this great opportunity, ‘Shogun’ gave me this great opportunity. I have one moment that has been given to me. I’m not going to squander it. We will see Saturday night what happens.”
Back in 2006, Vera knocked out former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir. He was 8-0 at the time, but has went just 4-5 since, including a loss that was changed to a no-contest with Thiago Silva.
Still, with a convincing win over Rua, Vera will move closer to punching his ticket for a title shot.
