USA Today has learned that an injury to Erik Koch has forced his exit from a planned October meeting with UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo.
Frankie Edgar, who recently announced that he would make his debut in the featherweight division, will step in and face Aldo at UFC 153 in Brazil.
UFC president Dana White said he found out Thursday that Koch was injured, and went right to Edgar about stepping in.
“I’m pumped,” White said. “I think that people are going to be very excited for this fight.”
Edgar dropped down from lightweight after a pair of losses to Benson Henderson in title matches. He is 14-3-1 in his career.
Aldo (21-1) is a perfect 3-0 since becoming the first UFC 145-pound champion.
