UFC 153 Receives Anderson Silva-Stephan Bonnar, Glover Teixeira-Fabio Maldonado

The UFC didn’t take long to piece together UFC 153, as UFC president Dana White confirmed with USA Today on Wednesday that the main and co-min event are once again intact.

UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva will return to the 205-pound division to take on Stephan Bonnar, while Glover Teixeira meets Fabio Maldonado in the co-main event.

UFC 153 goes down October 13 from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

On Tuesday, both UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson informed the UFC they would not be able to compete on the card. Frankie Edgar, Aldo’s scheduled opponent, will be re-booked for later this year.

Silva (32-4) offered to step up and compete at UFC 151 after that main event fell through, and White said he was willing to do the same for the UFC again.

We’re back on track. Anderson Silva wasn’t scheduled to fight at all. I called him today, and he’s hooting a commercial in Brazil. Anderson Silva steps up, and Stephan Bonnar wants to fight him. The Teixeira-Maldonado fight comes together, and then (Antonio Rodrigo) Nogueira was standing right there with Anderson shooting the commercial with him, and he said he wanted to fight, too.

Nogueira will meet Dave Herman in another main card affair. The event has also lost a scheduled match between Vitor Belfort and Alan Belcher.

This is old-school UFC. A card is in jeopardy, but guys that are world champions and superstars stepped up and jumped in and saved the card. This is why the fans love this sport and why we went on a 12-year run without canceling an event.

I guess he figures he can’t do worse than Forrest. This will HAVE to be the biggest odds difference in UFC history…

    Wow

    • quardy

8 weeks? This fight happens Oct 13th.

  • fil

WTF!? If you bring in Silva why not bring Chris Weidman, or Tim Boetch oe even Bisping ffs? Bonner is from another division. It´s just ridiculous! Makes no sense AT ALL! And if you think otherwise, sorry, get a brain!

  • Enough said

    Anderson aint bitch like jones.

  • fil

Cmon fellas wake up! Bonner is not even a top 10 fighter in another division… Nonsense!

  • steinos

Who really wants to see silva vs bonnar???? Pointless fight with no relevance :(

  • i like sexy time

What an absolute disgrace of a matchup. 1 of the best cards of the year has now turn out to be so crap i will refuse to pay for it. It will now have to be a “watch on the internet for free job”. First off as we all know bonar has no right to fight a campion because hes not even in the top 15 of the 205lbs. As for golver i was so looking forward to his fight with rampage. Now hes fighting a guy whos just come off 2 losses? I think they need to get rid of Joe Silva hes almost as dumb as fights hes putting together!

    • quardy

A lost is a lost but imho Maldonado beat both Kingbury and Pokrajac. The fight with Kingsbury was also FoTN a winner. Glover vs Fabio will be a stand up epic war!

      • i like sexy time

The thing is glover absolutely dominated kingsbury. If moldonado won both fights “by decision” say. It would still means hes having a hard time finishing people who are way outside the top 20 lightheavy weights in the world. Hes a nobody. Glover deserves a top 10 guy.

Did anybody stop to think that maybe the reason why guys like Bisping or Weidman aren’t being mentioned is because Silva doesnt want to cut weight to make 185 pounds with 4 weeks notice? This fight is taking place at LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT instead of MIDDLEWEIGHT. Therefore it is a NON-TITLE FIGHT. Why would a top contender like Weidman or Bisping, who fight at MIDDLEWEIGHT, waste their shot at Anderson Silva in a completely different weight class when it ISN’T EVEN FOR THE BELT? It makes no sense AT ALL! And if you think otherwise, sorry, get a brain.

Guys got injured, then other fighters manned up and asked for these fights on short notice. Maybe if your favorite fighters weren’t such crybabies, second tier opponents like Bonnar wouldn’t be on the card. Just a thought. Guys used to suck it up and push through problems. Now they whine and pull out of fights. Even if they’re healthy and had a full training camp.

It’s not Bonnar’s fault that he’s the only one at 205 who had the balls to step up and take the fight against Anderson Silva. Your light heavyweight champion certainly doesn’t. The UFC and the fighters don’t owe you shit. If you don’t like the card, don’t buy it.

Damn IPad trying to auto correct my name….

I guess my comment got deleted because it was the only response that was actually thought-out.

    • Dana Becker

Your comment is showing up when I look at the story…..didn’t get deleted.

  • Naro

non sense fights but fun to watch, Same as a Roman circus I guess, when they used to face a lion against fat slaves, so the people could watch some blood. It is obvious here who is the Lion and who is the fat slave LOL
