Alistair Overeem is currently suspended from fighting, but that doesn’t mean his name has left the mind of UFC president Dana White.
The UFC’s heavyweight division is currently ruled by Junior dos Santos. “Cigano” is expected to face former champion Cain Velasquez late this year, despite pushing hard for a match with Overeem first after “The Reem” made several comments concerning dos Santos.
White, during his post-fight press conference media scrum, informed reporters that they are looking to book Overeem vs. the winner of dos Santos-Velasquez in early 2013.
“The winner of that fight will fight Overeem (in March or April,” White said (thanks to MMAjunkie.com for the quote).
Overeem (36-11) earned a title shot after defeating Brock Lesnar late in 2011, but he was suspended after elevated levels of testosterone were found during a pre-fight drug test prior to his planned encounter with dos Santos. JDS went on to defend his title against Frank Mir, while Velasquez earned his shot by stopping Antonio Silva.
