Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and Alexander Gustafsson will collide in a key light heavyweight contest at UFC on Fox 5 in December. The bout will serve as the co-main event, and could go a long way in determining the next challenger to UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones.
Rua, a former champion, had an opportunity to face Jones this past September but turned down the bout. Gustafsson has lost just once in his MMA career, falling by submission to Phil Davis.
“It’ll put one of those guys in the position (for a title match),” UFC president Dana White told MMAjunkie.com over the weekend.
Rua (21-6) dropped the belt to Jones, but defeated Brandon Vera in August to solidify his stance in the division. Gustafsson’s (14-1) been sitting on the sidelines for several months waiting to return.
