Nick Diaz Will Need Welterweight Win Before Fighting For Title

Nick Diaz is planning a return to MMA upon completion of his current suspension for a failed drug test. Diaz continues to try and fight the suspension in court, but it appears like it will stand.

If that’s the case, the UFC is not planning on granting him an immediate title shot next year, according to UFC president Dana White.

“When Diaz gets off suspension, he’ll probably fight one of the top guys,” said White, during a recent conference call. “Then we’ll see what happens.”

Diaz (26-8) announced his self-imposed retirement after a decision loss to Carlos Condit earlier this year for the interim UFC welterweight title. Condit will fight GSP in November to unify the belts.

Diaz was originally set to face St-Pierre twice before. Once, the UFC removed him for missing a press conference. The second time, GSP pulled out of the fight with a knee injury.
