Kenny Florian was asked his take on the UFC’s decision to grant Chael Sonnen a shot at the UFC light heavyweight title over several other worthy contenders during a recent episode of UFC Tonight.
They’re saying, ‘Guys, you’ve got to step up and fight.’ Chael did it at short notice in a different weight class. And look at what’s happened to Lyoto Machida now. He’s been pushed to the back of the line and now he’s got to wait.
Sonnen was given the opportunity over the likes of Machida, Dan Henderson and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua. Sonnen’s last fight was vs. Anderson Silva, a bout he lost for the UFC middleweight title.
Sonnen and Jon Jones will compete on the next season of The Ultimate Fighter, and are being booked to face off in April. UFC president Dana White did say the decision was also based around Jones’ injury, which will keep him sidelined until early next year.
Florian is a former multi-time contender to UFC gold, competing in several weight classes.
