Joe Lauzon has grown into the role of “UFC Bonus Winner” during his career inside the Octagon.
Lauzon, who has earned 11 event bonuses for Fight, Knockout or Submission of the Night, trails only Anderson Silva in the category.
“J-Lau” will try to earn another in December when he takes on former UFC lightweight contender Gray Maynard at UFC 155. The bout could be an important one in deciding the next contender in the division.
“Is this like definitely a No. 1 contender fight? I don’t know,” said Maynard, in a recent interview with MMA Fight Corner. “It could, if you look at it that way. I don’t think anything’s going to be set in stone. I would love to fight for the title. That’s what everyone wants.”
Lauzon felt like a planned Anthony Pettis-Donald Cerrone bout would be the one to define a No. 1 contender, but that fight has ran into issues concerning the health of Pettis. “Showtime” defeated Lauzon earlier this year in Japan.
“I felt like ‘Cowboy’ and Pettis would be the next ones to fight for the title, but now that’s kind of hanging in the air,” Lauzon said. “I think those guys definitely want to fight each other.”
He did say that if his bout with Maynard was for the top contender spot, “That would be awesome.”
