Showtime may have hit the jackpot with the planned January Strikeforce card, as MMAjunkie.com is reporting Gilbert Melendez will make it three titles on the line.
Melendez will face Pat Healy, a bout that was scheduled for earlier this year. “El Nino” was forced out after suffering an injury in training, and Showtime decided to not air the event at all. That prompted Strikeforce to cancel the September card, along with one planned for November.
Now, Melendez-Healy for the Strikeforce lightweight title gets added to a lineup feature Strikeforce middleweight champion Luke Rockhold vs. Lorenz Larkin, and Strikeforce welterweight champ Nate Marquardt vs. Tarec Saffiedine.
The same report also indicates that Daniel Cormier will battle Dion Staring in what would be his final appearance for the promotion before moving on to the UFC.
Cormier, you will remember, was expected to battle Frank Mir in November before Mir exited with an injury.
