Years ago, Martin Kampmann and Johny Hendricks trained side-by-side at Xtreme Couture. At the time, neither had the other in their sights as far as potential opponents.
Now, after earning impressive victories in the welterweight division, Kampmann and Hendricks will battle this Saturday night in the co-main event at UFC 154. The winner will likely position themselves for a 2013 shot at the title.
“He was helping me with my wrestling,” said Kampmann, of training with Hendricks, during an interview with MMA Fight Corner. “We had a beneficial training relationship. One thing he did have, even when he was very raw, he’s got good power.”
Kampmann’s earned three consecutive victories, including a recent come-from-behind victory over Jake Ellenberger. In Hendricks, “The Hitman” knows that he will be put to the test once again.
“I’m still going to go in there for the kill, try to finish it,” Kampmann said. “I know this opponent way better than a lot of other opponents I’ve had, so I feel confident going into the fight.”
