When UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz finally returns to action from knee surgery, he will do so with at least one new sponsor backing him.
Cruz will be sponsored by Phoenix International Raceway, as the track announced following a recent NASCAR Sprint Cup race. Cruz served as the pace car driver, and will do so in March when they host another race.
“We are very excited to be sponsoring Dominick Cruz in his upcoming championship fight to retain the UFC bantamweight title,” PIR president Bryan R. Sperber said. “We believe this is the first time that a track has sponsored a UFC fighter and the fact that Dominick is both an Arizona and a NASCAR fa made this a great opportunity for us to support him.”
Cruz has been out since suffering a knee injury in training prior to a scheduled fight with Urijah Faber. The UFC paired Faber with Renan Barao after the injury, and Barao won the interim UFC bantamweight title. Cruz and Barao are expected to face each other in 2013.
