UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz was hit with some hard news recently, as doctors informed Cruz he will need to undergo a second operation to repair his torn ACL.
“He’s pissed and disappointed,” said trainer Eric DelFierro, in a recent interview with MMAjunkie.com. “But I think he’s doing better now. Once he talked to the doctor and found out what was going on, he felt much better.”
The cadaver placed inside Cruz was accepted by his body for his torn MCL, but not the ACL. He is likely to be shelved for at least another six-to-nine months for rehab, with a fight camp to add probably four more months to that.
Cruz has not fought since late in 2011, defeating Demetrious Johnson. He was cast with Urijah Faber as the first coaches for The Ultimate Fighter on FX, but suffered the knee injury in training.
Renan Barao, the current interim UFC bantamweight champion, is expected to defend his title against Michael McDonald in 2013. It’s possible that the interim title is lifted due to the time Cruz will have spent away from fighting.
