Gray Maynard has been “oh-so-close” to winning the UFC lightweight title.
Maynard, who was knocked out of a fight with Joe Lauzon later this year due to a knee injury, was recently asked his opinion on the upcoming UFC lightweight title match between Benson Henderson and Nate Diaz. The two will square off this Saturday night at UFC on Fox 5.
“Ben Henderson gets away with a lot of stuff because he is a lefty,” said Maynard, when asked by MMA Interviews. “So a lot of people don’t know how to deal with that. Nate knows. I think Nate will win because he’s been doing good (lately).”
Diaz moved to the lightweight division and topped Donald Cerrone and Jim Miller to cement his status as a contender to Henderson. “Smooth” won the belt from Frankie Edgar – who defeated Maynard – and successfully defended it vs. Edgar, as well.
Maynard tore several ligaments in his knee during a training session and is expected to resume workouts shortly. He said that he plans to face Lauzon upon his return.
