Shogun Rua’s Coaches Believe Wrestling Will Get Him Back To The Top In The UFC

The former coaches for Mauricio “Shogun” Rua believe they know what the ex-UFC champion needs in order to compete at the highest level again.

“I think we have to invest in wrestling,” said Sergio Cunha, during a recent interview with Tatame. “One way is to get someone out to focus on that piece of ground.”

Rua was unable to solve Alexander Gustafsson recently, falling by decision. The loss knocked Rua from the cusp of a title shot.

“‘Shogun is too fond of Curitiba, to be near family and friends,” Cunha said. “It may take a professor of wrestling to school. Brazilians need training wrestling.”

Some had talked about Rua maybe dropping to middleweight, but his old coach said that is “impossible. ‘Shogun’ is very heavy. He is even heavyweight.”
