Georges St-Pierre Discusses His Reasoning For Wanting Nick Diaz Next

UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre asked the UFC to give him Nick Diaz next.

The promotion, having worked with St-Pierre for years now, obliged, and the two are set to meet at UFC 158 in March.

St-Pierre and Diaz have had two bouts previously scheduled cancelled. The first was pulled after Diaz no-showed several press events, while the second was called after GSP went down with a knee injury.

Since the beginning, St-Pierre has seemed disgusted with the antics of the former Strikeforce welterweight champion, prompting the push to face him in early 2013.

“As an athlete, I want to give fans the fight they want to see,” said GSP, on Fuel TV recently. “I just finished my fight with Carlos Condit. The last fight between Carlos and Nick was controversial. I truly believe Carlos won, but some people believe Nick won. A lot of things have been said between us. This is the fight everyone wanted to see a year ago.”

GSP added that he feels it was “logical to fight Nick Diaz. I’m fighting for myself first and I’m fighting for fans, for the show and for the UFC, and I wanted to make this fight happen. I want this fight.”

St-Pierre returned from a year-plus layoff with knee issues to defeat Condit, while Diaz has been suspended due to a failed post-fight drug test following his loss to Condit. He is expected to be licensed in February when his suspension runs out.
