Jose Aldo Says He Is Ready To Go To Lightweight, Coach Is ‘Keeping Me Back’

UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo has his sights set on defeating Frankie Edgar in February at UFC 156. After that, it appears Aldo is planning a move to the lightweight ranks.

However, as he recently told MMAjunkie.com, his coach, Andre Pederneiras, believes 145 pounds is where he belongs still.

“Certainly I believe that I’m ready, but (Pederneiras) believes that I’m still too young so he’s keeping me back,” Aldo said. “But I think I’m fully capable of fighting one (weight class) above.”

Aldo (21-1) has not competed since this past January when he knocked out Chad Mendes in Brazil. He had a pair of title fights with Erik Koch postponed due to injuries.

“Scarface” said that “once I beat Frankie Edgar, I’m sure that I can prove that I can fight one notch above.”
