UFC Boss: Zuffa Never Purchased Strikeforce With Plans For Promotion To Close

UFC president Dana White wants to set the record straight: Zuffa never purchased Strikeforce with plans to fold the company.

However, after running into issues with Showtime, that is what has happened, as Strikeforce will hold its final card in January on the network.

“I see a lot of this shit on the Internet, people saying, ‘Oh, I knew this is exactly what we knew was going to happen. They bought (Strikeforce) to bury it,” said White, during a recent media scrum. “Any of you guys who were around me at the time know that was absolutely not the plan. I was pumped up about it and looking forward to getting into it.”

Instead, White quickly butted heads with Showtime and removed himself from the equation. Strikeforce cancelled two events to close out 2012, and decided to put together a stacked card to open 2013.

Injuries, however, continued to hinder the promotion, as two title bouts were removed from what would later be known as Strikeforce: Marquardt vs. Saffiedine.

Several Strikeforce fighters have already lined up bouts with the UFC in the first quarter of 2013, including Ronda Rousey and Robbie Lawler.
