It’s still a number of months away, but the tension between UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and Chael Sonnen is only going to grow heavier.
The two will meet at UFC 159 on April 27 from Newark, New Jersey. They recently finished filming for The Ultimate Fighter, which debuts January 22 on FX.
Jones will be seeking a record-tying fifth successful title defense against Sonnen, who is competing at 205 pounds for the first time in several years.
Thanks to his willingness to step in on short notice late in 2012 and meet Jones – along with his verbal skills – Sonnen worked himself into a title match despite being just 2-2 in his last four fights. Both of those losses came at the hands of UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva.
“There’s a rumor going around that says Jon Jones is the best,” Sonnen said. “We’re going to find out who wins – the best or the baddest?”
Jones, who has defeated four former UFC champions since capturing the belt in Newark against Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, replied, “The rumors are true, I am the best. On April 27, Chael will be put to the test. When it’s all said and done, he’ll be just like the rest.”
