Antonio Silva: Alistair Overeem A Great Striker, But ‘This Is MMA’

Antonio Silva has waited two long years for his opportunity to face former Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem. On February 2, “Bigfoot” gets his chance, as the two meet at UFC 156.

Silva, who was scheduled to meet Overeem in the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix, instead faced Daniel Cormier after Overeem pulled out. Since joining the UFC, Silva has gone 1-1, falling to current UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez before besting Travis Browne late in 2012.

“(Overeem) is a tough guy, great striking; a complete guy,” said Silva, during a recent conference call. “He is the best striker in the UFC. But this is not kickboxing; this is MMA. I am going to win this fight.”

The UFC has made mention that the winner of Overeem-Silva would become the next contender to Velasquez, though no official announcement has been made. Overeem was the No. 1 contender before failing a pre-fight drug test and receiving a nine-month suspension.

Silva, however, made it clear his focus is on Overeem right now, adding, “I don’t care about the title show. I have waited for this fight for two years and I am 100-percent focused on Overeem. After February 2, I am going to take on Cain Velasquez.”
