Frankie Edgar Plans To Take Jose Aldo Down At UFC 156

UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo has fended off several challengers since reaching the top of the 145-pound weight class.

That includes many elite wrestlers, but likely none as hard-nosed as his next opponent.

Aldo will put his title on the line against former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar at UFC 156 on February 2. Edgar decided to move down after failing to win back the belt from Benson Henderson in 2012.

Edgar, who has faced – and defeated – the likes of BJ Penn and Gray Maynard, knows he will be colliding with an elite fighter in Aldo, who is undefeated since joining the UFC.

“He is one of the most dynamic strikers (in MMA),” said Edgar, during a recent conference call. “He is explosive.”

While Aldo has been able to fend off the takedown attempts of many of his previous opponents, that has not caused Edgar any sleepless nights.

“I am going to test the waters for a takedown. I am going to loos for the takedown,” Edgar said. “But I am ready to stand, as well.”

Edgar said the move to featherweight has actually helped him prepare better, adding, “it has been pretty much positives. At 155, I forced myself to eat more to get heavier. I feel quicker, and it has been less stressful trying to eat every few hours.”
