BJ Penn and Randy Couture.
That’s it when it comes to the list of multi-division UFC champions.
Penn, who captured the lightweight and welterweight titles, and Couture, a former light heavyweight and heavyweight world champion, are both sitting where Frankie Edgar hopes to be by the end of February 2.
Edgar, a former UFC lightweight champion, takes on UFC featherweight champ Jose Aldo in the main event of UFC 156 for the belt. “The Answer,” who will be making his debut at 145 pounds, knows what is at stake.
“To be mentioned among guys (like Penn and Couture), that speaks for itself,” said Edgar, during a recent conference call. “But I just want to win the next fight. If I do that, everything takes care of itself.”
In Aldo, though, Edgar realizes he will be put to the test. The Brazilian has lost just once, and is currently riding a 14-fight win streak.
“He has a lot of tools, especially in the striking department,” Edgar said. “He has great takedown defense. He is very well-rounded.”
