Former UFC champion Vitor Belfort could be the man to welcome Luke Rockhold to the UFC, according to UFC president Dana White.
Earlier this week, during his usual post-fight press conference media scrum, White made it known that Belfort and Rockhold are in the works to face each other in 2013.
“We have a fight for Vitor,” White said. “I think it’s Rockhold. That’s what we’re talking about.”
Belfort recently defeated Michael Bisping, and immediately called for a rematch with UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones. Belfort lost to Jones in 2012, and the champ is set to face Chael Sonnen.
Belfort, however, believes he should replace Sonnen in the scheduled contest for April. Sonnen and Jones both laughed off the idea.
Rockhold, meanwhile, was the last man to hold the Strikeforce middleweight title before the promotion closed up shop. He is 10-1 in his career, including victories over Tim Kennedy, Keith Jardine and Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza.
No date was mentioned for the possible bout by White, though Rockhold has been pushing to compete on the April card from San Jose, the former home of Strikeforce.
