Anthony Pettis will have to wait for his shot at the UFC lightweight title once again, as the belt is currently set to be defended by Benson Henderson against Gilbert Melendez in April.
UFC president Dana White confirmed during the post-fight press conference following UFC on Fox 6 Saturday night that Pettis made a statement in defeating Donald Cerrone.
Pettis landed a nasty liver kick and dealt Cerrone his first loss via TKO. “Showtime” had been on the sidelines for most of 2012 after dealing with an injury and subsequent surgery.
Of course, Pettis has been in the No. 1 contender slot before. Upon entering the UFC from the WEC, Pettis was granted a title shot. However, the belt was tied up between Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard.
Pettis decided to take a fight with Clay Guida, and was defeated. Henderson went on to top Edgar and become the UFC lightweight champion.
