Former UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos talked about several issues that caused him to enter the Octagon last year vs. Cain Velasquez at less than 100-percent.
Dos Santos, who was defeated by Velasquez, claimed to be mentally and physically weaker as he fought Velasquez. Now, his long-time jiu-jitsu instructor, Yuri Carlton, has confirmed that “Cigano” split from his wife, Vilsana, prior to the bout in an interview with Tatame.com.
“To be honest, it is something that we can no longer hide,” Carlton said. “The separation hurt a lot. Vilsana is an angel who appeared in his life as a boy. Know that he loves her too, no more as husband and wife, but he will take it for life.”
The loss was the first inside the Octagon for dos Santos, who was never able to get his offensive attack going against Velasquez. He was nearly finished several times in the bout, but survived until the final bell sounded in the fifth.
