UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez believes he will be preparing to face Alistair Overeem later this year once UFC 156 is finished tonight.
That’s because Overeem has been told he will receive a long-awaited title shot if he can get past Antonio Silva.
“I think he’ll win,” said Velasquez, while appearing on MMAjunkie.com Radio recently. “I think ‘Bigfoot’s’ a tough dude, but Overeem definitely has a great chance. He’s been one of the top guys in this sport forever. He’s a big, strong guy with a lot of power.”
Velasquez already knows Silva quite well, as he defeated him in early 2012 to secure his rematch with then-champion Junior dos Santos. The two-time UFC heavyweight champ picked dos Santos apart to close out last year.
However, Velasquez is in the dark concerning a future opponent should Silva upset Overeem. He mentioned both Roy Nelson and Stefan Struve as possible opponents, as both are on current win streaks and have matches lined up in the coming months.
“I really haven’t thought about who it will be if Overeem doesn’t win,” Velasquez said. “The UFC hasn’t said anything, either.”
