Johny Hendricks comes from a wrestling background.
Hendricks, who excelled at Oklahoma State University as a two-time NCAA champion, doesn’t understand how other fighters can decide who they will face next. Where “Bigg Rigg” is from, you fight the best.
During a recent interview with MMAMania.com, Hendricks let some choice words fly regarding UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre.
After defeating Carlos Condit and unifying the titles, it appeared as if GSP would face Hendricks. However, the Canadian selected Nick Diaz as his opponent, and those two will meet next month at UFC 158. On the same card, Hendricks will battle Jake Ellenberger.
“My reaction was like, ‘Really?! You’re an idiot.’ He said that Carlos Condit really did beat Nick Diaz. He said, ‘I’m fighting the true No. 1 contender Carlos Condit,’ and now, he’s going backtracking and saying, ‘Well, I think (Hendricks) lost.’ Who cares? You don’t get to decide,” Hendricks stated. “He’s not a judge. He’s not a judge; he’s a fighter. He’s paid to fight and he’s paid to fight me.”
Hendricks (14-1) has won five straight since a decision loss to Rick Story, including finishes of Martin Kampmann, Jon Fitch and TJ Waldburger.
“The fact that he was able to ask and get this request (to face Diaz), the only thing this is, is it gives me more drive,” Hendricks said. “Whenever I look across the cage, he’s not going to see fear. He’s not gonna see anything. All I want to do is I want to fight him. I want to look across and see GSP and that might be something he’s not used to.”
