BJ Penn Battling Cataract In His Eye, But Does Have Sights Set On Another Fight

Former UFC champion BJ Penn has not announced his official retirement from MMA, but any type of return could stall because of an eye disease.

Penn, during a recent interview with his own personal website, stated that back in 2011, he started having difficulty with his vision. He was diagnosed with a cataract by doctors, and has been unable to fully regain his vision.

“People ask me all the time if I’m going to fight again, and I almost just want to change the subject because I definitely don’t want to fight with a cataract in my eye,” Penn said.

“The Prodigy” was defeated by Rory MacDonald late in 2012, dropping him to 1-4 since 2010. However, the Hawaiian held out hope for another fight, saying, “If I go in the gym and I’m knocking down all my sparring partners and doing awesome, I would definitely think of fighting again.”

The 34-year-old is 16-9-2 in his career, including wins over the likes of Matt Hughes, Kenny Florian, Sean Sherk and Matt Serra.
