The UFC’s Memorial Day weekend card received a pair of lightweight bouts recently, as Gray Maynard faces T.J. Grant and Khabib Nurmagomedov battles Abel Trujillo.
UFC 160 takes place May 25 from Las Vegas. The main event boasts Cain Velasquez defending his UFC heavyweight title against Antonio Silva.
Maynard (11-1-1) is a former UFC lightweight title contender, but will be fighting for the first time in almost a year after suffering a knee injury late in 2012. He defeated Clay Guida in his last fight.
Grant (20-5) has been on a roll since moving to lightweight, scoring four straight wins. He is 5-1 in his last six overall.
While Grant isn’t as big of name as Joe Lauzon was to Maynard, he likely will provide him more of a threat, especially considering the recent hot streak he has put together. A win over Grant should get Maynard right back into title contention.
Nurmagomedov (19-0) will be looking to secure a major fight with his fourth victory since joining the UFC. The Russian prospect bested Thiago Tavares earlier this year and has looked as impressive as anybody in the UFC over the last year-plus.
Trujillo (10-4) shouldn’t give Nurmagomedov much trouble. He looked impressive in defeating Marcus LeVesseur in his Octagon debut, and has won five straight bouts.
