Liz Carmouche Found It Difficult To Leave Invicta FC For The UFC

Liz Carmouche found a home with Invicta Fighting Championship, as the all-female promotion gave her a chance to shine.

However, the opportunity to compete in the UFC was one she could not pass up, and Carmouche left the promotion.

Saturday night, she will face Ronda Rousey in the first-ever UFC female fight, with the bantamweight title on the line in the main event of UFC 157.

Carmouche (8-2) went 2-0, competing on the first two Invicta shows. She defeated Ashleigh Curry via TKO and submitted Kaitlin Young. Carmouche recently talked with about her past in Invicta.

Invicta and everyone that is involved in it, they gave me a great send off. I had some hesitation leaving that organization because they took such great care of me, and all the other fighters. It felt like I was breaking loyalty. But I always had a contract with Zuffa and with Strikeforce so they were kind enough to let me fight in Invicta. So in all honesty my loyalty was to them. And Invicta, when I left they wished the best for me. They knew that I was on to better things. From the beginning they said ‘whatever you want to do we’re going to help make that possible.’ They’ve been nothing but supportive, they’ve just been amazing going forth.

Carmouche’s story is one of a fighter facing pressures outside of the cage. She is the first known gay or lesbian competitor to fight for the UFC, and is a former military personnel who went to Iraq numerous times. She might be on the wrong end of the odds for the Rousey fight, but she is not one to overlook.
