Former UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida made it known that he felt as if he was the No. 1 contender after defeating Dan Henderson.
UFC officials have confirmed that statement, and now, “The Dragon” doesn’t believe any fight not for the belt is worth his time at 205 pounds.
“Lyoto is on stand-by list waiting for the winner of Jon Jones vs. Chael Sonnen,” Machida’s manager, Jorge Guimarares told Fighters Only. “I think it is almost impossible for Chael to win this bout but anything can happen. Lyoto is the No. 1 contender and he is only waiting to see who is going to be the winner of this fight.”
Gustafsson, who some felt was the top contender, was forced out of a planned meeting with Gegard Mousasi earlier this month. Some have mentioned a potential Machida-Gustafsson match to solidify the No. 1 contender spot, but Guimaraes doesn’t see it happening.
The fight between Jones and Sonnen is going to happen now. It doesn’t make sense to fight Alexander. We’re almost there. If it were a little before, this fight could have already happened, but he just fought. Dana White has made it clear that Lyoto is the No. 1 contender. We’ll be waiting.
Hard to fault Machida, as he passed up a short notice title fight and was placed back in the line. Still, a “Dragon” vs. “Mauler” meeting would make for an interesting bout.
