Benson Henderson earned his third successful UFC lightweight title defense Saturday night, and immediately found out he will know his next challenger come May.
UFC president Dana White made it known during the post-fight press conference that the winner of Gray Maynard-TJ Grant at UFC 160 will receive the next crack at dethroning “Smooth.”
Maynard, a former contender to the belt when it was held by Frankie Edgar, has not fought since last summer. He defeated Clay Guida, improving to 11-1-1, but was forced to the sidelines when he suffered a knee injury in training.
Grant, meanwhile, has won four straight to improve his record to 20-5 in his career. He finished Matt Wiman this past January.
All I can really say is “WOW!” I honestly didn’t know who would be next for Henderson after Saturday, but thought a Melendez rematch would have more of a chance than Maynard-Grant getting a shot.
