Jon Jones Defeats Chael Sonnen, Suffers Gruesome Injury In Process

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

Everything seemed to go just as planned for UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones Saturday night.

He offered up hugs and kisses to his mother, father and fiance Octagon-side before out-wrestling Chael Sonnen.

With just seconds left in the first round, Jones finished off his challenger, tying Tito Ortiz for the most successful defenses of the UFC 205-pound belt.

However, seconds after being awarded his title, “Bones” looked down and noticed his big right toe turned the wrong way. Somewhere along the lines, he had broken it, likely sending him to the sidelines for several months.

“When the adrenaline calms down, I’m gonna need some pain meds tonight,” Jones said. “There’s a hole in the canvas somewhere I thought. I wasn’t planning on breaking my big toe. I was suppose to go to Jamaica after this, now I’m thinking that’s not gonna happen.”

While holding back what looked like an urge to pass out, Jones stated that he “Chael Sonnened, Chael Sonnen” in earning the victory.
