Johny Hendricks believed he was close to securing a shot at UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre after he finished Jon Fitch in a matter of seconds in 2011.
However, due to GSP’s knee injury and decisions to face Carlos Condit and Nick Diaz, “Bigg Rigg” was left doing battle with the likes of Josh Koscheck, Martin Kampmann and even Condit.
Now, after defeating all of the rest, Hendricks is expected to meet St-Pierre later this year. No date has been made official, but the contender told MMAWeekly.com in a recent interview that he believes the bout will take place this fall.
“I’m so excited to finally get to the Octagon and look across and there’s Georges. That’s all I can think about. That’s all I dream about every day. Words can’t explain how excited I am.”
Hendricks is also making plans to face GSP twice in a row, as he feels several outcomes could mean an immediate rematch for the current champ.
“I’m gonna have to beat him twice. Unless I knock him out. If I manhandle him for two round and I knock him out, then there won’t be a rematch,” Hendricks said. “But if it’s a close fight or I go out and knock him out in the first minute, yeah, (we will have) a rematch.”
