Matt Serra knows what it feels like to shock the MMA world.
Several years ago, Serra ended the reign of Georges St-Pierre atop the UFC welterweight division.
Now, the former UFC champion believes a student of his can do the same.
Chris Weidman will face Anderson Silva for the UFC middleweight title in July at UFC 162. “The Spider” has 10 successful title defenses to his credit, and 16 straight wins overall.
“I absolutely believe he will be the next champ,” said Serra to Bloody Elbow. “He has a strong belief in himself and he’s very confident. If things do go right, which I think they will, he’s not just winning, he’s finishing Anderson Silva.”
Weidman defeated Mark Munoz last year via knockout to secure his position as a challenger to Silva. He spent much of 2012, and the first-half of 2013, on the sidelines, recovering from surgery.
