Although the UFC has not made it official, it looks like the September 4th, UFC on FOX Sports 1 card is off to a strong start, as it’s being reported that Glover Teixeira will fight Ryan Bader and that “Jacare” Souza will battle Yushin Okami at the event. The Brazilian outlet Portal do Vale Tudo was the first to report the match-ups, and MMA Junkie.com is also reporting that the fights are likely for the event, which will take place in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.
While there was talk that Teixeira might throw down with Rashad Evans next, matching him up against Ryan Bader was somewhat of a no brainer, since they’re both ranked in the top ten and they were scheduled to fight at UFC 160. Bader had to withdraw from the card due to an injury, so Teixeira went in and cruised through replacement James Te Huna, by submitting the rugged light-heavyweight with a first round, guillotine choke. The win was Teixeira’s (21-2) fourth straight in the Octagon.
Bader (15-3) tapped out Vladimir Matyushenko in his last outing in January to get back on track, after he was knocked out by Lyoto Machida last August.
Talk of a Souza-Okami fight materialized not long after the former Strikeforce champ choked out Chris Camozzi at UFC on FX 8. The victory was Souza’s (18-3) fourth in a row since he was defeated by Luke Rochold in 2011, while fighting under the Strikeforce banner.
Okami (29-7) and his stifling top game may not be every fan’s cup of tea, but the powerful vet has won consecutive bouts over Alan Belcher, Buddy Roberts and Hector Lombard to remain a force at 185, after being defeated by Anderson Silva and Tim Boetsch.
