UFC 162: Frankie Edgar plans to get in Charles Oliveira’s face

Former lightweight champion Frankie “The Answer” Edgar is back in the title hunt at 145-pounds after a really close decision loss to Jose Aldo at UFC 156. Now looking for a rematch with the reigning champ, Edgar says he’s not dwelling on his last few losses. Each one of those decisions could have very well went either way. But that isn’t the do-or-die New Jersey native’s primary concern going into his co-main event scrap with the savvy submission ace Charles Oliveira at UFC 162: Silva vs. Weidman.

Edgar on his upcoming bout.

“I’m just gonna push the pace and fight my fight, a lot of it has to do with stand-up, so that’s something I’m gonna utilize in this fight,” Edgar said in a UFC interview. “He’s a tall guy, I’m gonna be the shorter guy. He’s a little skinny, compared to the other guys I’ve fought at 155 where they were tall and big. This is a blessing in disguise, I feel like going back to a three-round fight, I’m gonna go out there early and make sure first round that I’m in his face and I’m in the rhythm I like to be in the fourth and fifth. Because when I get back to title fights I wanna be able to do that.”

Edgar on his last three losses.

“It’s definitely frustrating, I prepare a lot, I’m not disappointed in my performances. I think showing up and being able to do what you did during camp is very important, I felt I did that in all last three of my fights, but it just didn’t happen to go my way. It’s almost like being in a wrestling tournament and taking second. They were close, and I lost, but I didn’t get dominated, I didn’t get stopped.”

Frankie’s opponent was stopped in his last fight with rising contender Cub Swanson. It was only two minutes and forty seconds into the fight, and Oliveira didn’t even make weight. The Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt is an offensive fighter with not as much experience under the bright lights.

Find out on fight night if Edgar can prove to be worthy of a rematch with the reigning champ at UFC 162 in Las Vegas, Nevada on July 6th.
