Former Strikeforce champ Gegard Mousasi recently called out Vitor Belfort at middleweight even though the light-heavyweight has only had a single fight in the UFC, and Belfort being ahead of the pack coming off two devastating head kick finishes over Luke Rockhold and Michael Bisping.
“The Phenom” isn’t ’bout to let Mousasi try to skip others in line for a middleweight title shot, and says if you want to fight him, you’ve got to earn it.
“First of all, if you want to fight Vitor Belfort, you gotta earn it,” he told sherdog. “Just like if you want to play someone who’s already in the semifinals, just because you won something a long time ago, you come and say, ‘Oh, let me play the guys from the semifinals.’ No, you have to earn your spot. I want to fight for the belt. That’s my goal, I have been proving, I’ve been earning…and the only fights I see for me are fights that move me up.”
Belfort is knocking on the door for a rematch with Anderson Silva, but if Chris Weidman defeats the longtime reigning champion and grants him an instant rematch, it can mean Belfort reaches a dead end at 185 lbs.
We’ll have to sit back and wait for the UFC 162: Silva vs. Weidman fight to figure out where Belfort goes from here.
