Anthony Pettis will get his UFC title shot after all, as an injury has knocked TJ Grant from a planned UFC 164 bout with Benson Henderson.
Now, Pettis takes his place in the August 31 main event from Milwaukee for the UFC lightweight title.
Pettis was the last fighter to defeat Henderson, as he won the WEC lightweight title from “Smooth” in the last match the promotion held. “Showtime” was expected to receive a shot at the title upon entering the UFC, but the timing hasn’t lined up.
Originally, Pettis was going to challenge UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo in August. Henderson has constantly said he will face whoever the UFC puts in front of him.
The knee injury that knocked Pettis out should be healed in plenty of time for the match, which takes place in his hometown.
The UFC’s official Twitter account first reported the change.
