UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson didn’t just sit on his laurels and cruise through the fifth round of his title fight with John Moraga Saturday night at UFC on FOX 8.
Up on all the scorecards easily after dominating the first 20 minutes, “Mighty Mouse” continued to look for a kimura. When that wasn’t there, he did was his corner instructed him to do between rounds – go for the armbar.
Johnson earned a verbal submission from Moraga, scoring the latest stoppage victory in the UFC.
“I don’t think when I go out there. I’m just going out to fight. I’m an artist and the Octagon is my canvas. I just went for the armbar and was waiting for it to pop, then the ref said it was over and he had tapped!” said Johnson, on the FUEL TV post-fight show. “This is my job. I’ve had big fights my whole career. I’m always fighting the best in the world. I’m training with the best coaches in the world. For me this is work and I’m providing for my family.”
While much of the talk around “super-fights” has centered around some of the larger weight classes, Johnson believes he should be included in potential matches with other division champions.
“For me I’m all about taking on challenges,” he said. “I think there’d be some good super fights with different weight classes in the lighter divisions.”
