Melvin Guillard has experienced the ups and downs of fighting in the UFC like no one before him – well, maybe outside of Dan Hardy.
Saturday night, Guillard likely saved his UFC career with a victory over Mac Danzig that earned him “Knockout of the Night” honors at UFC on FOX 8.
“Nobody is going to take my job from me in the UFC,” said Guillard, during the post-fight show on FUEL TV. “When I’m backed into a corner, I’m going to do my best.”
Guillard moved his training to Denver and Grudge, working with several new coaches and sparring partners. While the win over Danzig was the highlight, “The Young Assassin” has been going through plenty of emotions outside of the Octagon.
“I sacrificed a lot,” he said. “I lost my grandmother last week. Little sister is about to have brain surgery that’s very critical. I had a lot going on in my mind, but I wanted to win this one.”
Guillard surpassed BJ Penn for the most knockout wins in the lightweight division of the UFC, scoring his seventh. He also tied Jim Miller with his 11th victory at 155 pounds – the most in UFC 155-pound division history.
