With Anderson Silva no longer undefeated in the UFC, more of the super fight talk has seemingly shifted direction towards Jon Jones and Cain Velasquez. Since Jones has relayed in the past that he’s interested in moving up to heavyweight, discussion regarding a fight with Velasquez is nothing new, but it never reached the level of Jones-Silva.
Jones and Velasquez were in attendance today at a UFC World Tour Appearance in Los Angeles, however, and the light-heavyweight champ was asked about the possibility of moving to heavyweight. According to a report from MMA Fighting.com, Jones was quick to compliment Velasquez by responding: “Look at this guy next to me? Would you guys fight him? I don’t know…” Then, after revealing he had said that to avoid an awkward situation, the 26 year-old star added:
“Eventually,” he said. “I’m getting older, I’m growing, I’m getting stronger. Why not? Yeah, for sure.”
Jones is of course, set to fight Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 165 on September 21st, and when Dana White was asked if a win over the challenger would mean the champion’s cleaned out the division, Glover Teixeira’s name was called out by fans (who will fight Ryan Bader on September 4th). Apparently, Jones was also seen mentioning the rising light-heavyweight’s name, which is more than understandable. That’s a fight people are going to want to see if both men win their upcoming bouts.
Up next for Velasquez, is a third bout with Junior dos Santos, which will take place on October 19th at UFC 166.
