Fabricio Werdum is planning on entering a training camp without a fight lined up.
That’s because Werdum, who most view as the next contender to the UFC heavyweight title, wants to be prepared if anything happens to either champion Cain Velasquez or current challenger Junior dos Santos before they collide at UFC 166.
“I have to prepare myself to fight on October 19,” said Werdum, in a recent interview with Sherdog. “Of course we do not want anything to happen to anyone, but it happens from time to time. Injuries occur, anything can happen. I have to be ready.”
Werdum added that he will not be competing in the ADCC submission event coming up as a way to remain focused on both his pursuit of UFC gold and his role as a commentator for Spanish UFC events saying, “as a result of having these occupations, I will not compete at the ADCC.”
Werdum is 17-5 in his career, including a win over Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in his most recent bout.
