Former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir was taken back a few years during a recent conference call to promote UFC 164.
Mir, who faces Josh Barnett in the co-main event, was asked about starting out in the UFC and MMA as a whole.
“When I signed my first UFC contract, you didn’t brag about it,” Mir reflected. “I tried to describe (MMA) a few times and no one had a clue what you were talking about.”
Now, it’s hard to go anywhere without seeing something MMA-related, whether it be t-shirts, hats, posters or fighters in general.
“Everybody wants to be a fighter (now),” Mir said. “It is the cool thing to be in the Octagon, but it wasn’t that way back in the day.”
The 34-year-old Mir (16-7) will try to snap a two-fight losing skid when he faces Barnett, also a former UFC heavyweight champion.
