“Jacare” Souza demonstrated to UFC fans once again at UFC FN 28 why the hype surrounding him is more than well deserved, not only by defeating long time contender Yushin Okami, but by putting him away in the opening round. As a result of the massive victory the jiu-jitsu all-star has moved into the #3 middleweight slot in the UFC’s middleweight division, and it will be interesting to see what the promotion does with “Jacare” next.
Not long after his latest victory, Souza relayed that he’s down to take on all comers at middleweight (except training partner Anderson Silva), and is also up for bouts at light-heavyweight. Now in a follow up interview with MMA Fighting.com, the 33 year-old vet expanded on why he’s considering fighting at 205.
“That would give me more opportunities to work,” Souza said. “I’m not a big guy for 205, but I’m really strong and would do great fights in this division as well. I’ve always had this idea, I just never had the opportunity to show how ready I was for this challenge.
“I’m an employee that loves to work. If they give me an opponent I won’t look to rankings, I will just fight. Of course, my managers and coaches have their opinions, but that’s the way I see.”
Of course, some people will wonder if the possible move could be to avoid a future match-up with Silva, particularly if he reclaims the belt at UFC 168, but Souza insisted that it has “nothing” to do with that. The report also mentions a recent story from Combate.com, where Souza’s boxing coach Josuel Distak suggested “Jacare” versus Phil Davis. Now that would be an interesting fight.
